TW Cable in N.Y. will not swap CNBC/Bravo

Time Warner Cable of New York City will keep CNBC on channel 15 and Bravo on channel 64 — a complete about-face from TW’s Aug. 1 announcement that the two networks would swap dial positions.

CNBC hit the roof at being downgraded from the beachfront property of channel 15 to the frozen tundra of channel 65, hinting privately — and darkly — that TW was trying to castrate a network that had maintained its dominance over TW’s wholly owned CNN/FN, which shares channel 27 with the Madison Square Garden network.

What TW Cable of NY may not have realized when it engineered its channel-shift blueprint is that CNBC, wholly owned by NBC, concealed an ace up its sleeve: NBC also owns 25% of Rainbow Media Holdings, the parent company of Bravo.

In less than 24 hours, NBC was able to get Bravo to commit hara-kiri by rejecting the generous offer of a move to channel 15, where CNBC will continue to hold forth. In a joint statement, TW Cable and CNBC confirmed the TW Cable of NYC pullback of its plan to switch Bravo and CNBC.

TW Cable of NYC is also catching flack from the USA network for being moved from channel 23 to channel 40 in favor of Court TV, which is half-owned by AOL Time Warner.

Other changes

But that change will stay in place, as will two other dial-position shifts. In the first, Viacom’s TNN: the National Network will move from channel 72 to channel 36, displacing the Weather Channel, which gets pitchforked to channel 72.

The other change gives a boost to the Liberty Media/Comcast-owned QVC home-shopping network, which elbows out the Cinemax pay channel on channel 33. Cinemax somersaults back to QVC’s old slot at channel 69.

All of these changes take place on Sept. 5.
