Latin ‘Band’ stand

Nick, MTV will jointly tune up reality series

MIAMI — Nickelodeon Latin America and MTV Latin America have jointly acquired reality series “Making the Band,” which follows young men trying to win a place in a boy band.

A dubbed version will preem on Nickelodeon Latin America in June. MTV Latin America will air a subtitled version later in the year.

“Making the Band” is part of Nick’s strategy to expand its music programming. “Via primary research and emails, Latin American kids told us they wanted to see more music on Nickelodeon,” said Tatiana Rodriguez, senior director of programming and acquisitions.

Nick Latin America has aired “S Club 7 in Miami” and “S Club 7 in Los Angeles,” based on a young British band’s adventures, and has its own interactive programs such as “Musick Nick,” “DJ Nick” and “Nickslusivo.”

“DJ Nick,” which allows kids to choose online a favorite video clip out of three rotated heavily on the channel each week, generates 10,000 votes a week, Rodriguez said.

Nickelodeon Latin America has 11.9 million subscribers throughout Latin America, including Brazil. MTV has 11 million in Spanish-lingo markets only (a Brazil operation is run separately).
