Japan’s Sky’s big sales boost

World Brief

Japan’s satellite platform, Sky Perfect, boosted its fiscal 2000 sales by 58% to 48.6 billion yen ($405 million), while losses were flat at $199 million from $200 million. Cumulative deficits now stand at $778 million.

Sky Perfect increased its subscriber count by 46% to 2,618,000 by March 31, the end of its fiscal year, thanks mainly to the merger with rival satcaster DirecTV Japan last September.

The continued deficits reflect heavy subscriber promotion, with rebates and discounts to hardware manufacturers and retailers totaling $100 million, as well as expenses of $833 million to cover the migration of DirecTV subs.
