Good cop, bad cop

'Job' works for ABC, but Eye's 'Apple' gets bit

ABC’s Denis Leary cop comedy “The Job” showed some promise in its debut Wednesday, but ratings for CBS’ police drama “Big Apple” were, well, rotten to the core in a special post-“Survivor” outing.

According to Nielsen, DreamWorks/Touchstone’s “The Job” placed second to NBC’s “The West Wing” in both total viewers (9.99 million) and adults 18-49 (5.1/13). These numbers, while below what original episodes of “Spin City” had averaged in the 9:30 slot this season, rep a credible start given that lead-in “Drew Carey” logged some of its lowest firstrun marks of the season (10.38m, 5.1/13).

Critically acclaimed “Job” retained all of “Drew’s” 18-49 audience — the best any post-“Drew” comedy has done since March 1999 (“Spin City”). Series about a jaded, foul-mouthed New York City police officer surprisingly fared better among women than men, losing some of “Drew’s” male viewers 18-49 (4.7 vs. 5.1) while gaining female viewers (5.4 vs. 5.0).

It didn’t do as well among adults 18-34, losing 15% of “Drew’s” audience and placing third. Fox, effectively stunting with a repeat of “The Simpsons,” siphoned off some of the younger male aud and won the half-hour in 18-34 by 2 shares over “West Wing” and 5 shares over “The Job.”

In unique position

With Fox going with a special in the timeslot next week and “West Wing” airing a repeat, “The Job” is in the unusual position of potentially improving on its premiere numbers with its second try. “Job” will once again get a firstrun “Drew” as a lead-in.

As for “Big Apple,” its first of two skedded Wednesday episodes retained a puny 26% of its “Survivor” lead-in among adults 18-49 (3.1 vs. 12.0) and 29% in adults 25-54 (3.9 vs. 12.8). Last Thursday, it held onto an unsatisfactory 43% of its 18-49 lead-in from “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.”

CBS went from winning the night’s opening hour by 25 shares in its target demo of adults 25-54 with “Survivor” to falling 10 shares behind leader “West Wing” in the following hour with “Apple.”

‘Survivor’ keeps aud

“Survivor” fans certainly followed the show to its special Wednesday airing, which was necessitated by the net’s Thursday coverage of the men’s NCAA basketball tournament. The reality adventure series topped the other five networks combined from 8- 9 in total viewers (28.46m vs. 26.23m), adults 18-49 (12.0/33 vs. 10.9/30), adults 25-54 (12.9/32 vs. 11.5/28) and adults 18-34 (12.7/37 vs. 10.1/30).

Without NBC’s “Friends” as competition, “Survivor” soared to best-since-premiere marks in women 18-34 (14.4/41) and adults 18-34 (12.7/37).

CBS held on for a rare Wednesday victory in both viewers (15.8 million) and 18-49 (6.1/17) — only its second of the season.
