Emmy performers: John Corbett

In from the cold, 'Sex' on the brain

More than 10 years ago, “Northern Exposure” made its mark on primetime television as a unique, eclectic offering with a sense of humor not quite tapped before.

And last year, John Corbett, “Exposure’s” quirkly DJ Chris Stevens, landed on another series that has its own distinctive style and cult following: HBO’s “Sex and the City.”

Corbett admits he didn’t watch the show before he was contacted about appearing as Sarah Jessica Parker’s flame Aidan.

“I somehow wasn’t aware of it and I don’t know how such good TV slipped by me,” Corbett confesses, “but I went nuts after the first 10 minutes of the first tape and started having marathons and laughing out loud. I became a huge fan.”

Corbett describes Aidan as someone who wants to find love, who knows it’s time to find somebody to spend some time with.

The actor admits his biggest professional challenge is remaining focused very long on one character, which affects his role choices.

“My attention span is good for two, maybe three months playing a character and then I’m done. I don’t want to play that character anymore.”

He will be seen in several episodes of “Sex” this season, and co-stars with John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale in the upcoming Miramax pic “Serendipity.”

Unlike other thesps who seek to sit in the director’s chair, Corbett says he’s quite content for now.

“I enjoy acting,” he explains. “I’m like a bass player in a band. I just want to play the bass, I don’t really want to write the songs or sing ’em.”
