Before Ben Affleck and Matt Damon greenlit the three finalists Monday for their pic competish, Project Greenlight, Affleck addressed the 10 remaining contenders before a packed Hollywood Galaxy. “I never thought I would hear myself utter something so asinine, but you are all winners. We have tiaras for all of you,” Affleck said.
The duo proceeded to comment on the irony that while they are only a part of the Greenlight team (HBO, Miramax and Live Planet all collaborated), Miramax told them: “Hey, why not send the actors up to bear the news. So if you are not one of three finalists and you did not like our films before, I guess there is no chance you will now,” Damon joked.
The winner, to be announced today, will be at the mercy of Miramax and the absent co-chair Harvey Weinstein (who, of course, delivered a message via tape), as the pic gets made.
During the overcrowded after-party, held at the Knitting Factory, finalists Barron Ebenstein, Evan Katz, Pete Jones and Brendan Murphy greeted the press.” After watching all 10 of our three-minute scenes, we agreed there were better directed works than ours,” Katz said. “Though in the end, we know it was our script that carried us this far and whatever happens next, we already won because we got the exposure we were hoping for.”
Spotted at the Greenlight festivities were Miramax TV prexy Billy Campbell; Miramax execs Jon Gordon, Janet Hill and Meryl Poster; Live Planet partner Chris Moore, and guests Casey Affleck, Michael Clarke Duncan, Tara Reid, Charlize Theron and Patrick Whitesell.
