‘Corelli’s’ romance

Cruz, Cruise make first appearance as a couple

HOLLYWOOD — It was a night of romance Monday as Penelope Cruz and Tom Cruise made their first public appearance as a couple for the “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin” preem Monday at the Academy.

Making a more low-key appearance were Nicolas Cage and Lisa Marie Presley, who arrived late and left early, avoiding the media hoopla.

All the media attention on romantic couples didn’t surprise helmer John Madden, who predicts the film has potential as a great late-summer date movie Stateside.

“The weird thing is that women will want to go and see it, and men will drag their heels. Then they’ll get there and be really pleased they went because it’s actually so much about the way men feel,” Madden said.

Basking in the after-party’s Mediterranean atmosphere were producers Tim Bevan and Kevin Loader; cast members John Hurt, Piero Maggio and David Morrissey; screenwriter Shawn Slovo; U’s Ron Meyer, Stacey Snider and Rick Finkelstein; and guests James Coburn, Cameron Crowe, Cary Elwes, Susanna Hoffs, Juliette Lewis and Johnny Ramone.
