Disney brings top toon pic pack to Mip

Titles combined for over $2 bil B.O. worldwide

LONDON — Walt Disney Television Intl. plans to offer six of Disney’s animated features as a package at Mip TV in Cannes next week, marking a new direction for how the Mouse sells to overseas broadcasters.

The titles — “Toy Story,” “Toy Story 2,” “A Bug’s Life,” “Pocahontas,” “Mulan” and “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” — took in a combined $2 billion-plus at the box office worldwide. Disney is hoping to extend that success with its sales to terrestrial television.

In the past, Disney has been tentative in handing over its animated crown jewels to terrestrial TV, doing so typically on a one-off basis.

David Hulbert, prexy for Walt Disney Television Intl., told Daily Variety the Mip offering is “the next step” in developing existing relationships with programming buyers. “It’s part of our plan to be the supplier of choice to our broadcasters.”
