BMG cops Karpin as Oz division topper

Exec replaces Rubin, relocating to L.A.

BMG Music Publishing has tapped veteran Australian A&R exec Peter Karpin managing director of its Australian division, effective May 15.

Reporting to BMG Publishing’s Asia-Pacific VP Jane English, Karpin succeeds outgoing managing director Mitch Rubin, who is relocating to Los Angeles. Karpin will take on creative, administration and financial duties for BMG’s Australian roster, which includes hit gospel songwriter Michelle Tumes, dance-pop singer Leah Haywood and indie rocker Ben Lee.

Karpin comes to BMG from News Corp.’s Mushroom Records, where he oversaw the A&R department for the Australian label. Prior to that, he spent 12 years as general manager of A&R at Sony Music Australia, where he had a hand in the signing of hit alt-rock trio Silverchair, as well as regional pop stars Tina Arena and Daryl Braithwaite.

Karpin also worked A&R stints at CBS Records in the U.K., U.S. and Australia, during which he signed Down Under phenoms Men at Work and platinum-selling chanteuse Basia.
