Acquisitive Minds: Tetsuya Fujimura

President, Gaga Communications

Recent buys: “Green Mile,” “Hannibal,” “The Mexican”

What prior job or experience best prepared you for film acquisitions?

“I began in video-rights acquisition and distribution 15 years ago, when the video market was growing quickly. I then shifted gears and got into the (theatrical) distribution business, first as a means to put an added value to video rights.”

How would you rate the acquisitions climate?

“I think there’s always a dearth of good products. The Hollywood strike may contribute to the shortage, but we are often at a standstill in our future distribution planning because of the lack of good films.”

What’s your advice to filmmakers vying for your attention?

“We look for things that stand out, whether the products are for national or single-theater release.”

What’s your favorite place to screen a film?

“Since I go to most major film festivals around the world and to markets in between, I don’t really care (at) what venue I screen films.”

Which film do you wish you had picked up but didn’t?

“Nothing I can think of.”
