The Apollo Theater Foundation has announced the formation of its new management team. Derek Johnson, a senior exec at AOL Time Warner, has been named president of the Apollo Theater Foundation, effective May 1.
David Rodriguez, the former exec director of the John Harms Center for the Arts in Englewood, N.J., assumes the same role at the historic Apollo Theater, located on 125th Street. His appointment is effective immediately, reporting to Johnson.
Richard Parsons, chairman of ATF’s board of directors, praised the two men, adding, “A revitalized Apollo can be the catalyst for Harlem’s economic and cultural renaissance.”
Johnson is a seven-year veteran of Time Warner. He and his family live in Harlem.
During his three-year tenure at John Harms, Rodriguez oversaw that theater’s renovation. Previously, Rodriguez was exec director of Aaron Davis Hall, a performing arts venue in Harlem. He also studied music at the Eastman School of Music and performed at the Apollo during his days as a musician.
