‘World’ takes over Czech box office

World Brief

“Dark Blue World” cast a golden glow on Czech box office receipts on its opening weekend.

The film by Oscar winner Jan Sverak (“Kolya”) broke opening weekend records with nearly 89,000 admissions and $200,000 in box office.

With a minimum 1 million total admissions projected, the WWII romantic drama about Czech pilots serving in the U.K.’s Royal Air Force pushes local arthouse distrib Cinemart into competition with U.S. majors here.

“We did 2-1/2 times better than ‘Titanic,’ ” said producer Eric Abraham. Abraham has sold the film in 16 territories and is negotiating U.S. rights.
