SINGAPORE — The 11th Silver Screen Awards honored the best of Asia’s films in the culmination of Singapore’s 14th Intl. Film Festival (SIFF).
The award for Asian film went to Japanese feature “Eureka,” directed by Aoyama Shinji. Indonesia’s “A Poet,” from Garin Nugroho, won the Critics Award and the actor nod.
More than 350 films, including 70 shorts, unspooled in two weeks. The Special Achievement Award went to Colin Goh for “eAhlong.com,” one of six Singapore films shortlisted. Goh also received the Caltex Performance Grant.
One of the island-state’s local directors, Eric Khoo, credits the festival and the awards with nurturing the local film industry. “Without the SIFF there would not be a thriving film industry here in Singapore,” he said.
Khoo got his start through SIFF before helming his popular first feature, “Mee Pok Man.”
