Helmer John Schultz (“Drive Me Crazy”) has jumped into the Fox hoop pic “Like Mike,” which has multiplatinum teen rapper Lil’ Bow Wow attached to star.
“Like Mike” centers on a youth (Bow Wow) who comes across a pair of Michael Jordan’s sneakers, which hold magical powers. While staying the same size, the teen is transformed into a basketball superstar and later plays in the NBA.
The studio picked up the spec script last spring from scribe and former Source Entertainment prexy Michael Elliot, who has multiple projects at the studio, including “Brown Sugar” at Fox Searchlight, which he co-wrote with helmer Rick Famuyiwa. Pic started lensing in Gotham this week.
Elliot is attached to produce “Mike,” as is his manager Peter Heller through his Heller Highwaters Prods. banner.
Fox production veep Elysa Koplovitz, creative exec Asha Kurian and production prexy Hutch Parker are overseeing the film, which has become extremely timely in light of Jordan’s return to the NBA.
Schultz, who is repped by CAA, is also helming “Ripley Under Ground” for Searchlight. His other credits include 1996 indie pic and Sundance entry “Bandwagon,” which he wrote, produced and directed.
