The Sundance Institute Intl. Program and Riofilme in Brazil have selected 10 projects for the fifth Sundance-Riofilme Screenwriters Lab, set to take place June 5-10 in Nogueira, Brazil.
The lab allows participating screenwriters the opportunity to collaborate in story meetings with creative advisers to develop their works.
“We are thrilled to work again with Riofilme and Carla Esmeralda of Esmeralda Ltd. to identify some of the most exciting new filmmakers in Brazil,” said Diane Weyermann, director of international programs at the Sundance Institute.
The participants and projects selected for the 2001 Sundance/RioFilme Screenwriters Lab include: “A Historia de De” (A History of De) by Paulo Lins, Breno Silveira, and Cladio Torres; “A Retirada” (The Retreat) by Xavier de Oliveira; “Chuva no Telhado” (Rain on the Roof) by Sheila Soares; “DF” by Erid de Castro and Erico Beduschi; “O Meio do Mundo” (Middle of the World) by David Franco Mendes; “O Outro Lado da Rua” (Other Side of the Street) by Marcos Bernstein and Melanie Dimantas; “Odisseia Urbana” (Urban Odyssey) by Mauricio Fernandes; and “Os Anjos do Sol” (Angels of the Sun) by Rudi Lagemann.
The screenwriters will be working with a group of accomplished creative advisors from Brazil, Spain and the U.S. This year’s creative advisers include, from the U.S., Scott Alexander, Duncan North, Zach Sklar and Beatriz Novaro; from Spain, Jesus Regueira; and from Brazil, Suzana Amarral, Jorge Duran, Paulo Halm, Di Moretti and Elena Soarez.
Riofilme Distribuidora was created in 1922. Besides distributing Brazilian pictures for movie theaters, video and television, Riofilme participates in film production, sponsoring up to 10 feature-length movie projects each year. Riofilme supports and participates in joint partnerships with other Latin American countriesto encourage international exchange through film.
Also supporting the lab this year is the Servico Social do Comercio, an institution dedicated to social welfare of Brazilian society.
