‘Others’ gets 15 Goya noms

'News From God' nabs 13 nominations; 'Mad Love' garners 12

MADRID — Alejandro Amenabar’s “The Others” has taken a leading 15 nominations for the 16th Goya Academy Awards, Spain’s top film honors. The noms include best film, director and actress (Nicole Kidman).

Other picture contenders are Penelope Cruz Spanish-lingo starrer “No News From God” (which scooped a total 13 noms); Vicente Aranda’s biopic of loopy Spanish Queen Joan the Mad, “Mad Love” (12 noms); and Julio Medem’s raunchy drama “Sex and Lucia” (11 noms).

“The Others” lead in nominations can be put down not only to the local critics’ support but also to patriotic pride at Spain having co-produced the U.S. summer sleeper. International success has not always curried much favor with Spanish Academy members. For years, up to “All About My Mother,” they gave Pedro Almodovar’s pics the cold shoulder despite overseas acclaim.
