Gold Stars reward rooted pix

'Patriot,' 'Pollock,' 'Thirteen Days' first recipients

The Film & Television Action Committee has tapped “The Patriot,” “Pollock” and “Thirteen Days” as first recipients of its Gold Star awards for choosing to shoot in the United States rather than overseas.

FTAC, a 2-year-old coalition of below-the-line industry employees fighting runaway production, said the three pics were selected because each has strong American themes and because their producers resisted financial incentives to shoot in foreign locations.

“It is quite important that we do all we can to reward and acknowledge those filmmakers whose artistic integrity has not been compromised by the bottom line and those who attempt to shoot America in America despite pressures to film in foreign locales,” said FTAC chairman Brent Swift, a production designer.

Los Angeles-based FTAC also announced it will provide a promotional “Filmed in the USA” graphic, created by production designer and art director Ann Champion, to producers of movies and TV shows shot entirely in the United States.
