Inside move: M’max falls out of autumn film marts

Co. will still screen 'Jay and Silent Bob,' 'Serendipity' in London

Citing the uncertain climate that has come upon the world post-Sept. 11, international distribution giant Miramax Films has taken the unprecedented step of bowing out of the fall film markets altogether.

“Miramax Intl. has reluctantly reached a decision not to attend the London Screenings or Mifed market,” Miramax Films worldwide distribution chairman Rick Sands announced in a letter faxed to distributors Monday.

Miramax had already decided not to attend the annual Mifed market in Milan, Italy (Daily Variety, Oct. 15). That event runs Oct. 27-Nov. 2. The London Screenings run Oct. 22-26.

In the letter, Sands cited “the current international climate and the understandable resistance of so many of you to travel” as factors in the decision.

Miramax will still hold buyer screenings for “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” and “Serendipity” in London.

The London and Milan markets represent a primary point of contact for international buyers between Cannes in May and the American Film Market in February.

A Miramax spokesperson would not comment on the letter.
