Kruger in ‘Ring’ for DreamWorks

Verbinski said to be in talks to helm

DreamWorks Pictures has closed a very high six-figure deal for Ehren Kruger (“Scream 3”) to adapt “The Ring,” the Japanese suspenser the studio picked up for $1 million (Daily Variety, Feb. 1).

Director Gore Verbinski (“The Mexican”) is said to be in talks to direct the film.

Kruger recently sold spec “The Brothers Grimm” to MGM; the thriller is a revisionist take on the classic tales.

“The Ring,” to be remade in English, was based on a series of novels by Suzuki Koji. “Ringu,” the first book in the series, was published in 1995 and successfully adapted to television. The 1998 bigscreen version broke Japanese box office records.

In “The Ring,” a journalist investigates an urban legend about a cursed videotape said to kill whoever sees it, seven days after exposure to its supernatural contents.

DreamWorks theatrical production exec Mark Sourian brought “The Ring” into the studio. Project will be supervised by production co-heads Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald.

Kruger, repped by Paradigm, also penned such scripts as “Reindeer Games,” “Arlington Road” and “Impostor.”
