The buzz on this movie is louder than a chainsaw, with standing-room audiences at Sundance and early talk of Oscar nods. But will it play in Peoria? Described by creator-director-star John Cameron Mitchell as a “post-punk, neo-glam rock musical,” the Off Broadway hit is the story of Hedwig (Mitchell), born a boy named Hansel in Berlin, who falls in love with an American G.I. and undergoes a sex-change operation in order to emigrate. The operation is botched, leaving Hedwig with the titular “angry inch.” Left high and dry in a Kansas trailer park, but Hedwig forms a rock band — only to have her songs stolen by former lover-turned-rock star Tommy Gnosis. With comparisons to “Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “This Is Spinal Tap,” “Hedwig” just might play everywhere.
