Teutons seeing red

'Furious,' 'Rouge' heated; 'Diary' draws Italos

Germany saw smart but not scintillating bows by “The Fast and the Furious” and “Moulin Rouge” over the weekend while “American Pie 2” kept cookin’ in the U.K. and “The Princess Diaries” captivated Mexico.

Elsewhere, “Bridget Jones’s Diary” was quite seductive in Italy and “Cats & Dogs” drew a fair number of tykes in Japan.

Universal/UIP’s actioner “The Fast and the Furious” led the field in Germany, revving up an estimated $1.8 million Thursday through Saturday from 486 locations.

“Moulin Rouge” cancanned into Germany with roughly $1.6 million in four days on 404 prints — 18% better than the debut of “Shakespeare in Love,” 20th Century Fox reported Sunday.

Tuner tames Spain

Easing by about 20%, Baz Luhrmann’s tuner reigned in Spain, ringing up about $1 million Friday-Sunday on 227, bringing its 10-day total to $2.9 million. That’s 20% more than the helmer’s “Romeo + Juliet” earned in its entire run in Spain.

After a socko preem, the “American Pie” sequel fell by an acceptable 36% in Blighty, scoring an estimated $2.8 million Friday-Saturday on 415 and hoisting its nine-day total to almost $14.4 million.

“America’s Sweethearts” waltzed into the U.K. with a pleasing $1.6 million in two days on 411, ahead of fellow frosh “Jeepers Creepers” ($1.5 million on 304) and “Atlantis: The Lost Empire” ($788,000 on 469, plus $675,000 in sneaks).

Mexico draws royalty

On the heels of a lucrative run in Oz, “Princess Diaries” raked in $512,000 in two days on 233 to claim the crown in Mexico.

Handled in Mexico by Fox, Guillermo del Toro’s psychodrama “The Devil’s Backbone” came in at No. 2, picking up approximately $904,000 in three days on 242.

Renee Zellweger starrer “Bridget Jones’s Diary” penned $275,000 in two days on 38 screens in Italy’s key cities (repping some 30% of the nationwide B.O.), which UIP calculated as 12% higher than “Shakespeare in Love’s” entry in the keys.

In Japan creature feature “Cats & Dogs” fetched an estimated $1 million in two days on 203, which Warner Bros. reckoned is 183% ahead of “Mouse Hunt” and 170% better than “Dr. Dolittle 2.”

In subdued trading Down Under, “Scary Movie 2” took pole position with an underwhelming $737,000 in four days on 188, just ahead of “Legally Blonde,” which courted $703,000 in its soph session (tumbling by 45%), bringing its 11-day tally to $3 million.

Perhaps the frame’s biggest disappointment, considering its domestic results, was Denzel Washington starrer “Training Day,” which kicked off its foreign campaign in Japan with a slender $385,000 in two days on 160.
