President shoulders ‘Weight’

Pic is first produced by son of Berri

CANNES — France Television’s President Films will handle all rights except France on a new project that promises to be one of France’s biggest this year, the $20 million action pic “Dead Weight,” co-produced by Thomas Langmann’s La Petite Reine and Warner Bros. France.

Pic, which started shooting in Morocco last month, will be the first movie produced by Langmann, son of French director-producer Claude Berri.

President chief Hugo Bergson Vuillaume described “Dead Weight” as a “a cross between ‘Taxi’ and (Mathieu Kassovitz’s thriller) ‘Crimson Rivers’, ” adding, “It’s an action-comedy in which the action comes first.”

President’s lineup this year also includes the three-years-in-the-making epic docu “Traveling birds,” directed by “Microcosmos” producer Jacques Perrin, and the festival’s closing night pic, Raoul Ruiz’s “Savage Souls.”
