CANNES — IFC Films has acquired all North American rights to Jordan Melamed’s directorial debut, “Manic,” which stars Don Cheadle and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, from Next Wave Films. IFC plans an early 2002 release.
“Manic,” which world-preemed at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival, centers on a group of troubled young people struggling to overcome their demons in a private mental institution with the help of an empathetic psychologist (Cheadle).
Partners Kirk Hassig and Trudi Callon produced the pic. Michael Bacall and Blayne Weaver, who also co-star, co-wrote the script.
Rounding out the cast are Zooey Deschanel, Elden Henson, Cody Lightning and Sara Rivas.
Executive produced by Next Wave president Peter Broderick, “Manic” was the first feature to receive production financing through Next Wave’s digital production arm, Agenda 2000.
