Fremaux flummoxed by Teuton titles

German pix weak, sez Cannes head

BERLIN — Teutonic filmmakers just don’t have the right stuff, according to Thierry Fremaux, new artistic director of the Cannes Film Festival.

Fremaux checked out 16 German pics vying for Cannes but found none worthy, which means the country won’t be represented for the eighth year in a row.

The fest topper told German weekly Der Spiegel that Teuton cinema lacked a distinctive style and had not developed the strength and significance that powered the revival of British film in the 1980s, when directors like Mike Leigh and others examined modern society.

“A good film has to be able to say something to the whole world,” Fremaux said.
