Col TriStar giving ‘Evil’ the eye

$40 mil Anderson-helmed pic stars Jovovich, Rodriguez

CANNES — Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group is in final negotiations to acquire North American distribution rights to “Resident Evil.” As yet, it has not been decided which Sony label will release the film.

Constantin Film and Intermedia co-financed and rep international rights to the pic, budgeted in the neighborhood of $40 million. Pic started shooting March 5 in Berlin with Paul Anderson (“Mortal Kombat”) directing Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, James Purefoy and Eric Mabius.

From vid to screen

“Evil,” a horror thriller based on the best-selling Capcom videogame (17 million units sold worldwide, for a franchise valued at more than $600 million), is the first film to fall under the new production pact between Anderson and Jeremy Bolt’s Impact Pictures and Constantin. Samuel Hadida is co-producer.

Deal is being brokered by Benedict Carver, veepee acquisitions for CTMPG, with Constantin repped by ICM’s Ken Kamins.

Anderson and Bolt share producing credit with Constantin CEO Bernd Eichinger.

Crazed computers

Story focuses on a military unit that fights against a powerful supercomputer that is out of control. In order to save the world, the military unit must combat hundreds of scientists who have mutated into flesh-eating undead due to a laboratory accident.

Intermedia is handling international distribution outside Germany, Austria and Switzerland, where it is being handled by Constantin. Production on the pic was overseen by veteran Stateside producer Mitch Horwits, president of Constantin Development, the wholly owned U.S. film subsidiary of Constantin Film.
