Chabrol plants ‘La Fleur’ at mini-major MK2

Eliacheff-penned project to shoot at year's end

CANNES — Claude Chabrol is preparing his next film, the $6 million “La Fleur du mal” (Flower of Evil), with his longtime producer, French mini-major MK2.

Pic is about guilt moving from one generation to the next, with the story encompassing World War II to the present day.

It is being penned by Caroline Eliacheff, who co-wrote Chabrol’s 2000 release “Merci Pour le chocolat” and 1995’s “La Ceremonie.” Both pics starred Isabelle Huppert.

“La Fleur,” which will shoot at the end of the year, takes its title from Baudelaire’s collection of poems, “Les Fleurs du mal.” It will be the director’s 13th film with MK2.

“I like continuity,” MK2 chief Marin Karmitz told Daily Variety.

The company is branching out, however, with its first-ever animated film, the $6 million “The Rain Children,” a co-production with Belokan Prods.

The film is about two enemy nations, one sun-worshipping and the other rain-loving.

Success breeds attempt

Florence Terne, who heads international sales at MK2, said the company was encouraged to try its hand at animation following the huge success of the French-made animated African fable “Kirikou et la Sorciere.”

“There is a market for visually stunning animation, and we want to tap into it,” she said.

MK2’s slate at Cannes includes Bangladeshi film “The Clay Bird” by first-time helmer Tareque Masud. In competition, MK2 has Michael Haneke’s “The Piano Teacher,” while Abbas Kiarostami’s “ABC Africa” is tapped as a special screening. Tunisian pic “Fatma,” by Khaled Ghorbal, is unspooling in Directors Fortnight.
