Catch picks ‘Runt’ of the litter

Helmer also to provide soundtrack, score

Catch 23 Entertainment has agreed to finance “Runt,” a $10 million pic to be directed by Limp Bizkit lead singer Fred Durst and exec produced by David Fincher. Universal Focus will handle the pic’s domestic release. A fall start is planned.

Filmmaking has quickly become a top priority for the chart-busting Durst. With new representation from UTA in all areas outside music, he is in negotiations to direct “Wannabe” (aka “Hoodfellas”) for Intermedia Films and Outlaw Prods., as well as “Life Without Joe,” a thriller scripted by Brent V. Friedman (“Mortal Kombat: Annihilation”) that will be co-produced by American World Pictures and Immortal Entertainment (Daily Variety, May 14).

Durst plans to promote his productions across all media platforms. Limp Bizkit will provide the soundtrack and score and promote the projects on the band’s heavily trafficked Web site, on concert tours and through MTV appearances.

“Runt” follows an outcast teen who is endlessly taunted and persecuted by a trio of bullying jocks. When they kill his dog, he decides to avenge the loss before realizing he must break the cycle of violence and move forward with his life.

Written by William J. Coakley and Christian Van Gregg, who are repped by Writers & Artists, “Runt” will be produced by Michael London and Amy Wilkes with C23’s Robert B. Sturm and Jeremy Barber.

“I believe that Fred will bring the same talent and passion to directing ‘Runt’ that he brings to his musicvideos and to leading Limp Bizkit,” Barber said. “Fred is uniquely situated to tell this story.”

C23’s Suzanne Warren and Bobbi Padilla will oversee the production of “Runt,” with C23 holding all worldwide rights.

“Wannabe,” written by Anthony Zuiker, follows a young man who is injured, losing his chance to become a professional baseball player, and returns to his Yonkers neighborhood, where he gets involved with the Mafia. Script is based on Mike McAlary’s New York magazine article “Breaking the Code.” Outlaw’s Bobby Newmyer and Scott Strauss will produce, with Intermedia’s Basil Iwanyk overseeing production.

Durst, who developed his visual style directing videos for his band and others, including Korn and Staind, began a European tour with Limp Bizkit this week. He is repped by UTA and management shingle the Firm.
