F/x mag Cinefex has been one of the top chroniclers of the advancements in the visual effects industry over the past 20 years. The web component of the publication, which comes out four times a year, has quotes from James Cameron and George Lucas that will lead you to believe that Cinefex is the only true source of effects journalism.

Although George and James may be going a bit overboard here, you have to agree that the site has one of the best databases about upcoming f/x-driven pics and which companies are working on which projects.

Clicking on “A.I.,” for example, takes you to an elegant page, which offers a nice synopsis of the film, as well as informing the masses that Industrial Light & Magic is taking care of the visual razzle dazzle, that Dennis Muren and Scott Farrrar are tapped as visual effects supervisor and Michael Lantieri is the man to see for physical effects. Also in the mix is production company info, and credits for cinematographer and production designer.

This is one of the few places where you can turn to when you’re desperate for the right information about special effects credits. To help assist frazzled researchers, pics are also cross-referenced under titles, release dates and effects company listing.

Browsers shouldn’t expect to find any of the mag’s comprehensive, and very lengthy essays on the wizardry of “The Grinch,” but they can always order back issues of the mag for $15 or so. After all, if it’s good enough for Cameron and Lucas, it has to be good enough for the rest of us.
