HOLLYWOOD — In an unusual twist, the only place the special edition of Dimension’s “Spy Kids” will be offered for the foreseeable future is in movie theaters.
The Sept. 18 video release of the family action-adventure film that generated a surprising $106 million on its initial theatrical release in March will not include the extra scenes that were added for a special edition theatrical re-release Aug. 9.
With director Robert Rodriguez so busy finishing shooting on “Desperado 2: Once Upon a Time in Mexico” (aka “Mariachi 3”) and planning to start shooting “Spy Kids 2” the first week of October, there are no plans at this time for a special DVD edition of “Spy Kids.” In fact, there are no plans even to release on VHS or DVD a straight movie-only version of the pic that is currently playing at theaters.
A spokeswoman at Showtime said that barring any changes, the version that the pay cabler will run next March will be the original theatrical release.
The special edition generated a disappointing $1.2 million in its first weekend of re-release at theaters.
