St John will top BMG Australia arm

Dickson upped to general manager of marketing

BMG Entertainment Asia-Pacific senior VP Michael Smellie has promoted marketing exec Ed St John to managing director of BMG Australia.

The Bertelsmann music division also tapped Ian Dickson, currently general manger of BMG imprint RCA Records U.K., as general manager of BMG Australia’s marketing department.

St John, who most recently spent three years as marketing director and later general manager of marketing for international and Australian artists at the Australia unit, replaces Tim Prescott, who was just appointed VP of marketing/A&R and general manager for the Asia Pacific Region.

Prior to joining BMG, St John worked at Sony Music, first as an ad manager at Sony Australia and later as director of marketing for Sony imprint Columbia Records. Exec has also worked as an editor in Rolling Stone’s Australia bureau.

Dickson also worked as a music journo, at U.K. publication the Record Mirror. He later held publicity, marketing and exec posts at CBS Records U.K., Epic Records and A&M Records. He joined BMG in 1998 as VP of the international division.

Dickson will report to St John, who in turn answers directly to Smellie. Both execs will be based in Sydney. Both appointments are effective July 1.
