And the Writers Guild Award for on-air promotion goes to … we have no idea. On Sunday night, just as NBC’s Lori Sunshine was accepting her award at the East Coast ceremonies in Gotham, a different winner (WABC’s Scott X. Thompson) was announced as the winner at the West Coast ceremony in Los Angeles.
Startled reporters and editors checked with WGA staff about the discrepancy, with the staff concluding that an error had been made in the list of winners that the guild had prepared prior to the ceremonies.
On Monday the guild changed its conclusion: The pre-ceremonies list was correct and Sunshine was indeed the winner. Apologizing profusely, the guild said Thompson’s name was incorrectly put in the envelope for the West Coast rites. No further explanation was offered on how this happened.
Thompson took the situation in stride, calling Daily Variety on Monday to point out the mistake and say he appreciated being listed in the awards column even if it was in error.
