Dayton upped in SAG reorg

Hot seat will be liaison between staff, officers, committees

The reorg at the Screen Actors Guild has continued with longtime exec Clinta Dayton promoted to the newly created post of national director of guild governance.

Move puts Dayton in the SAG hot seat as she will be official liaison between staff and the officers and committees repping the 98,000 members. The exec, who will continue to be based at the Hollywood headquarters, has been serving as national director of administration and branch relations/assistant Hollywood exec director.

Along with ongoing fractiousness in the board room, clashes between staffers and elected officers have hobbled SAG’s effectiveness in recent years, according to last year’s Towers Perrin cost-benefit analysis.

“A leadership void exists,” the report said. “There are power struggles between various member factions, board and officers, staff and board, staff and officers and staff and staff.”

The promotion comes a month after the board filled the CEO slot with former studio exec Bob Pisano, who launched a sweeping restructuring last week. Dayton’s duties previously had been handled by a variety of execs along with the office of the president.

Sallie Weaver, tapped last week by Pisano as deputy national exec director for policy, planning & external affairs, made the announcement.

“Clinta has made and continues to make invaluable contributions to the guild,” Weaver said. “We’re very pleased that she has accepted this pivotal position and know that her expertise will enable SAG leadership to implement vital policies, making SAG the most influential guild in the entertainment industry.”

Dayton, who has worked for SAG since 1967, comes into the job with a reputation for diligent work and without any major negatives among board members.

Dayton’s specific duties call for her to determine and coordinate agendas, oversee preparation of work materials and minutes, and prepare the annual calendar of meetings and other major functions. She also will administer all elections to ensure compliance with federal law and SAG’s constitution and by-laws.

Pisano warned guild staff last month to avoid any involvement in the upcoming elections, for which ballots go out Friday. Dayton issued a similar memo to staff in late August.
