AFTRA signs up news ops

SmartRoutes, Westwood One to be repped by union

HOLLYWOOD — The American Federation of Television & Radio Artists has organized a pair of Westwood One’s operations in Massachusetts.

AFTRA announced that the 18 reporters at the SmartRoutes operation in Cambridge, Mass., voted unanimously on Aug. 1 to be repped by the union. Org also said 95% of employees at Westwood One’s Metro Networks operation in Boston had voted last month for AFTRA representation, making it the 10th Metro Networks operation to affiliate with AFTRA since 1997.

AFTRA’s national board also recently ratified new collective bargaining agreements at Metro Networks and Westwood One’s Shadow Broadcasting operations in New York, Seattle, St. Louis, Mo., and San Diego, Calif. The union also renegotiated a prior agreement with Shadow Broadcasting in San Diego.

AFTRA said the agreements provide for wage increases, improved benefits and enhanced working conditions.
