WCBS-TV New York has canceled the anemically rated “Dr. Joy Browne” daily hour at 3 p.m. and replaced it with a second run of “Hollywood Squares.”
King World, a sister company of WCBS, distributes “Browne” and “Squares,” and also the long-running “Inside Edition,” which the station will shift from the graveyard timeslot of 2:30 a.m. to the much higher visibility 3:30 p.m. In exchange for the desirable upgrade, a WCBS spokeswoman said King World has promised to produce more New York-oriented stories for placement on “Inside.”
Sources said “Squares” and “Inside” will serve as time-period place holders until another King World series, the hourlong “Curtis Court,” makes its debut this September on WCBS.
The CBS-owned TV station in Chicago, WBBM, has also canceled “Browne” as of March 27. Although King World has made no formal announcement about the fate of “Browne,” sources say the show will not be back for a sophomore season because it has underachieved in the Nielsens ever since it premiered in September 1999.
