Syndie shows start to feel summer blahs

Ratings sag for gameshows and newsmags

Memorial Day kicked off the first full week following the May ratings sweep as well as the first signs of syndie’s traditional summer ratings doldrums.

Three of the four vet newsmags hit series lows during the week that ended June 4. “Extra” and “Access Hollywood,” which both air on the NBC O&Os, suffered from a number of preemptions in order to make room for NBC’s NBA playoff coverage. “Extra,” currently in its sixth season, was down 13% from the previous week to a 2.5 rating, according to Nielsen. “Access,” in its fourth season, was down 26% to 1.7.

In its 11th season, “Inside Edition” was the other mag in the trio to hit its all-time low, moving down 11% from the previous week to 2.5.

The genre’s ratings leader, “Entertainment Tonight,” was also down, 7% to 5.4. Newcomer “National Enquirer Television” was the only mag to hold steady, at 1.4 for the third straight week.

Gamers were also not immune to the summer blues. “Wheel of Fortune,” “Jeopardy” and “Hollywood Squares,” the three top-rated gameshows, all hit season lows.

“Wheel” was down 4% to 9.2; “Jeopardy” was down 6% to 7.7; and “Squares” was down 8% to 3.6.

In talk, things were likewise bleak, as the majority of shows in this category were lower than the previous week. “Rosie O’Donnell” was the only yakker, however, to hit its season low, slipping 9% to 3.2.

Gavelers were more of a mixed bag. While genre-leader “Judge Judy” and “People’s Court” hit season lows, at 6.1 and 2.3, respectively, the others were either flat or slightly up.

In the weekly race, “Entertainment Tonight’s” weekend version and “X-Files” met at the top, with a 3.9 each. “ET” weekend was up 8%, while “X-Files” was down 3%.

“Stargate SG-1” was second among first-run weeklies, behind “ET,” with a 3.2, which was down 3%. “Xena” followed, down 24% to 2.9.
