NEW DELHI — Rupert Murdoch is boosting Star TV in South India. The platform will now beam the popular Tamil language channel Vijay TV.
Peter Mukerjea, CEO of Star TV India, said the deal was to be expected as Star holds a 12% stake in Ronnie Screwvala’s UTV (United Television), parent company of Vijay TV.
After turning Star Plus into a complete Hindi language entertainment channel, Star will brand itself in local lingos in the southern region under the Star Vijay brand.
The competition in the regional market is getting stiffer, with Zee Telefilms also busy acquiring South Indian language channels.
