Filmtown Entertainment has added another champ to “The Consultants,” inking NBA star Dennis Rodman to the upcoming action series for a fall debut, according to company CEO Alan Mruvka.
The basketball career of Rodman, a former member of the Chicago Bulls and L.A. Lakers, has been the source of much speculation after he appeared in a number of movies in recent years. He will now join former WWF femme champion Rena Mero, karate expert Jeff Speakman and former WBC Light Heavyweight belt holder Jeremy Williams in “The Consultants,” about a team of investigators who are skilled in the martial arts.
Mruvka, company prexy Joey Nittolo and “Baywatch” co-creator Michael Berk will exec produce. The series will be shot in Las Vegas.
“All the stations have been really positive about Rodman’s presence in the show,” Mruvka said. “As big as the cast is already, this makes it bigger. Kids love him, and he’s a bigger-than-life personality. He is destined to become a breakout action star.”
Rodman will play the strategist of the group, as a brilliant yet emotional war veteran who deals with unpredictable mood swings and heightened senses due to a bullet lodged in his brain. Berk said that Rodman took to the wildness of the character and agreed to the show as a result.
“We wanted to create something fun for Dennis,” he said. “And it’s a place he’s never gone before, so he loved it. It’s a coup for us because he has a terrific presence on the screen.”
Rumors about Rodman’s return to the NBA have surfaced in recent weeks. Should he take to the basketball court again, taping skeds won’t interfere with his playing, Berk said.
Rodman has previously appeared in features “Simon Sez” and “Double Team.” He has also taken television roles in “S.O.F. Special Ops Force” and Turner’s World Championship Wrestling. He will now join the group at NATPE on Wednesday to promote the show.
