International action star Jackie Chan will soon become an action figure.
Sony Pictures Consumer Products has named Playmates Toys as the first official toy licensee for “Jackie Chan Adventures,” based on the new anime-style series airing Saturday mornings on Kids WB!
Deal awards Playmates the rights to create the first line of merchandise, which will include action figures, play sets, plush toys and electronic role-playing accessories based on Chan’s character on the series. The “Jackie Chan Adventures” toy line will appear on shelves January 2001 with action figures and playsets, with additional products planned for a summer 2001 release.
“Our program will focus on Jackie Chan’s star power, the comedic aspects of the series and the rising popularity of martial arts among kids,” said Michael Riley, VP marketing for SPCP.
The six-inch action figures “in the unique fighting style of Jackie Chan” will come packaged with Kung Fu defense weapon accessories.
Pact is the first of SPCP’s plans for a comprehensive licensing and merchandising program that will include a variety of other categories, such as apparel, collectibles, and publishing.
“Jackie Chan Adventures” is a production of Sony Pictures Family Entertainment group, a division of Sony Pictures Entertainment.
