Pay cabler Flix tries new tricks

Comcast deal, Pick and Mix gimmicks attempt to raise sub count

NEW YORK — The mini-pay network Flix, a sibling of Showtime, has revamped its on-air look and scheduling strategy and signed an affiliation deal that will get the network on Comcast Cable’s digital tier.

Showtime has created a tagline for Flix: Cool Classics for the Movie Generation. Fresh marketing gimmicks include “Flix Pick” must-see movie Friday nights at 8. “Flix Mix” consists of a back-to-back double bill every Sunday night at 8 featuring a noted actor in an old and a recent movie, a picture from a director’s early and recent work or a title in a genre from decades ago and from the past year or two.

To increase its subscriber count, Flix has made itself available to cable operators on a digital platform in recent months. Showtime said Flix is now potentially accessible to 28 million basic-cable subscribers, although they will have to pony up an extra monthly fee to get the network. The actual number of Flix subscribers who pay the added tariff was not available.
