Nelvana adds two toon skeins

'Braveface,' 'Cyberchase' to make 26 episodes each

TORONTO — Kids TV producer Nelvana has announced production plans for two new animated series, “Braceface” and “Cyberchase,” plus the renewal of two other series.

“Braceface” is a series of 26 half-hours to be co-produced with China’s Jade Animation. Set for delivery to Fox Family Channel in the U.S. and Teletoon in Canada in spring 2001, it stars Alicia Silverstone (“Clueless”) as the voice of 13-year-old metal-mouth Sharon Spitz.

Nelvana is partnering with Thirteen/WNET New York for “Cyberchase,” a 26-episode series set to premiere nationally on PBS Kids in winter 2002. Series concerns three kids and their mission to defeat the evil Hacker, who is on a quest to take over the cyberworld.

Company also renewed its half-hour animated miniseries “Redwall.” This will be the third sequence of the series, based on Brian Jacques’ “Martin the Warrior” tale of a young mouse who becomes a hero in the small English cathedral Redwall Abbey.

In addition, Nelvana has begun production on the second season of “Maggie and the Ferocious Beast,” bringing the total number of half-hour episodes of the preschool series to 26. “Maggie,” based on the Simon and Schuster book by Betty and Mickey Paraskevas, is a hit on Nick Jr. in the U.S. and has sold to more than 75 international territories.
