Japan’s satcasters bow test beams

Full-scale ops targeted for December

TOKYO — Test broadcasting started this week for the new Japanese satcasters that will take to the air in December.

Each of Japan’s commercial networks will operate a channel on the digital broadcast satellite; currently, only a few retailers and a handful of customers who purchased equipment for the new channels can see the test broadcasts.

Japan’s broadcasting industry is expected to undergo a fundamental change when the new webs begin full-scale operation in December. The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications expects 10 million households to enlist in the digital broadcasting services in the first few years of operation.
