Comic thesp Garry Shandling has been tapped to host ABC’s broadcast of the 52nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards.
It’s the first time Shandling has hosted the kudocast, skedded to air Sunday, Sept. 10, from 8-11 p.m. Net may air a special edition of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” as a lead-in to the tube awards show.
“I’m really looking forward to the Emmys this year because there is nothing I can lose except my dignity,” Shandling said. “I really enjoy working with (Emmy producer) Don Mischer — he thinks I’m very funny.”
Andrea Wong, ABC’s VP of alternative series and specs, said Shandling’s signing represented “a huge coup” for the kudocast. “His great sense of humor makes him the ideal person for the job,” she said.
While he’s never fronted an Emmycast, Shandling has hosted the Grammys three times. He snagged a writing Emmy in 1998 for HBO’s “The Larry Sanders Show.”
Nominations for this year’s Emmys will be announced July 20.
