NEW YORK — Colorado Gov. Bill Owens took Barbara Walters to task on Monday for letting John and Patsy Ramsey off easy.
During an interview with Owens on ABC News’ “Good Morning America,” Owens criticized Walters — who was subbing for “GMA” co-host Diane Sawyer — for being too soft on the parents of young murder victim JonBenet when she questioned them on “20/20” on Friday. (The Ramseys are suspects in the crime.) Owens even went so far as to suggest that Peter Jennings or Tom Brokaw would have been tougher on the couple, who have been making the talkshow rounds promoting their new book “The Death of Innocence: The Untold Story of JonBenet’s Murder and How Its Exploitation Compromised the Pursuit of Truth.”
But, Walters, who told Owens she “resented the implication” that her male counterparts would have been more probing, must have done something right. The interview with the Ramseys gave the newsmag its season-high rating of 14.1/25 and helped the net to a nightly win in total viewers and adults.
