Fox, MSNBC, CNN score for Iowa coverage

Presidential caucus fuels double-digit ratings rise

Fox News Channel, MSNBC and CNN scored Monday night, with ratings for coverage of the Iowa Presidential Caucus significantly topping each news net’s fourth quarter primetime averages.

FNC outscored MSNBC’s coverage, achieving a 0.9 rating (equivalent to 387,000 households) in primetime, compared with MSNBC’s 0.4 rating (214,000 households). With little distribution in the Des Moines, Iowa market — 9,000 households, compared with FNC’s 216,000 and CNN’s 269,000 — MSNBC was clearly at a disadvantage. Meanwhile, CNN’s primetime coverage averaged a 1.1 rating (840,000 households).

FNC’s coverage marked an increase of 67% over the net’s fourth- quarter primetime average rating of 0.5 (232,000 households), while MSNBC’s coverage was a 24% increase over their fourth-quarter 1999 primetime average of 0.3 (172,000 households). CNN’s coverage marked a 51% increase over their fourth-quarter ’99 primetime average of 0.7 (557,000 households).
