EC approves sports events for live TV

World Brief

The European Commission has approved the U.K. government’s list of key sporting events that it aims to ensure must be available on free-to-air TV.

The decision will apply even if the exclusive rights for U.K. viewing have been bought by a broadcaster in another member state of the European Union.

The sporting events that must be available for live broadcast on BBC1, BBC2, ITV or Channel Four include the Wimbledon tennis finals, the Olympic games, the soccer World Cup and a handful of major soccer and rugby matches and horse races.
