Telco regulators debating between Japan, Euro versions

RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazilian authorities may opt for Euro or Japanese high-definition TV standards in a ruling due this summer that could influence other markets in the region.

Brazilian telco regulatory agency Anatel is weighing the adoption of Japan’s ISDB standard or Europe’s DVB against the U.S.-developed ATSC.

A task force comprising reps from 17 broadcasters will release a recommendation on a standard on April 30. Anatel will then hold public hearings on the issue and will make its final decision in July or August.
