Proving that she can do it on her own, alternative-soul siren Amel Larrieux descended upon Hollywood with her angelic voice and gumbo rhythms to give anxious fans a taste from the burgeoning “neo-soul” movement that she is helping to push along.
Former lead singer of Groove Theory, Larrieux just released her first solo effort, the critically acclaimed “Infinite Possibilities,” on the 550/Sony label.
Although Larrieux lacks a natural command of the stage, she did seem to get increasingly comfortable as the night progressed, interacting with the crowd, inviting them to sing along and, finally, touching on works from her former group.
The mellow pace of the performance began to change through songs such as “I-n-I” and the jazz laced “Down,” in which her background singers whipped up the crowd with choreographed movements and powerful vocals; Larrieux maintained the energy by sinning over Latin and Afro-beat rhythms, as well as scatting on “Down.”
The nightcap was Larrieux’s performance of hit songs from the Groove Theory catalog such as “Tell Me and “Lift Your Head” and stirring solos from her five-piece band that excited the crowd.
