CANNES — The deals may pale against the merger mania sweeping the music majors, but there has been brisk business at Midem this year.
Longtime U.K. label Cooking Vinyl has pacted with U.S. e-tailer Emusic.com in a deal that will see the label’s entire catalog posted on Emusic’s site. In traditional distribution, Richard Branson’s V2 has licensed the catalog of Britain’s Eagle and American outfit Spitfire for Taiwan and Greece.
By Wednesday, Midem’s last day of full-on business, attendance was up almost 10% on 1999 to nearly 10,000. Notably, Internet-related companies exhibiting at the music market rose from 20 to 53.
Reed Midem’s director of music, Christophe Blum, said execs from the majors at Midem had in particular been interested in MidemNet, a one-day conference on digital distribution that preceded the traditional market.
