Actor Omar Sharif is set to be the honorary president of the Fifth Paris Biennale of Arab Cinema, being held from June 30 to July 9.
The festival will present films from North Africa and the Middle East at the Arab World Institute, a modern glass structure on the banks of the Seine in the center of Paris.
Kuwaiti filmmaker Khaled el-Seddik will head the jury for the best feature film. The 13 films in competition come from Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Sudan, Syria and Tunisia.
TPS, France’s second largest digital satellite platform and main rival to Canal Satellite, has appointed Philippe Bony managing director of its film subsidiary, TPS Cinema. TPS Cinema runs four movie channels, Cinestar 1& 2, Cinefaz and Cinetoile, broadcast by satellite and cable.
Bony keeps his job as director of sports and cinema acquisitions for the Program division of TPS, where he is involved in contracting with American majors.
Bony will remain managing director of Multivision, a subsidiary of TPS, which he launched in 1994, as Europe’s first pay-per-view TV platform.
