Printed version of Variety to offer new addition

Consumers are spending more money on renting videos each year — more than $8 billion in 1999 — than on purchasing movie theater tickets.

While the rental of VHS tapes has flattened out in recent years, the emergence of the DVD format has sparked a growth in overall rental spending of 3.3% so far this year.

Today, Daily Variety bows two new weekly charts from sister publication Video Business, featuring the top 10 VHS and DVD rentals from the prior week.

These charts will run every Thursday. See page 22.
